Crossbow bolts are not too complex to make, but due to their considerable size require quite a lot of materials.

— Metro Exodus in-game description

Arrows or Bolts are large steel needles made inside the Metro for use in makeshift weaponry, primarily the Helsing.

Overview

Helsing bolts are rare and very expensive; one Helsing bolt from a weapons vendor costs seven MGR to buy, while selling one will lose you 6 MGR as they will only pay one MGR per bolt. However they dish out enormous damage, only taking one bolt to dispense of any human foe and many mutants when fully pressurized. You can avoid buying many bolts as they are retrievable, but a few will likely have to be purchased since few are found in the Metro.

In Metro 2033, the arrows see much more frequent use as Helsings can be found earlier and more frequently. In Metro Last Light, however, the weapon is much less common, so arrows are utilized less. The one advantage Last Light arrows seem to have is that they have a distinct fluorescent orange tip, making them easy to spot in the dark Metro tunnels.

Arrows (now called Bolts) return in Metro Exodus. They are first found at the beginning of Taiga level. 10-20 bolts can be collected in the starting area where the player first finds the Helsing. When Artyom retreives his backpack back later in the level, bolts can also be crafted, 10 mechanical materials are required to produce one bolt. Without any upgrades, the player is able to carry up to 32 bolts.

In Metro Exodus, the rear tip of the bolts are painted in a luminescent green material to aid the player in retrieving them. Especially helpful when using the Helsing in low light conditions i.e. nighttime or dark indoor areas.

Tips and Trivia

  • The HUD icon for arrows has barbs, but the in-game model does not, possibly to make them easier to retrieve from bodies. The barbs on the icon are probably present to easily distinquish what type of ammunition it is, as otherwise, it would just be a plain metal rod.
  • Although they can be retrieved, the player should not count on this, as they can be lost if they are fired into scenery or if they hit ammunition pouches that fall off the body. One should always carry more than they need.
  • In Metro 2033, this type of ammo is called 'Arrows', but in Metro Last Light and Metro Exodus, the in-game name is 'Bolts', which is a more fitting name, as Helsing is more similar to a crossbow than to a regular bow (in Metro Exodus, most configurations of Helsing are actually crossbows) and the bolts are fairly short.
