The subject of this article appears in the Metro 2034 novel.

Artyom has other uses. Please see Artyom (Disambiguation) for other meanings.

Artyom Popov (Russian: Артём Попов) is one of the four main characters in Metro 2034 - alongside Homer, Sasha, and Hunter.

Overview[]

Since the book's plot is presented through the contrasting perspectives of various personas, one half of the narrative is focused on the aforementioned trio whereas the other half follows Popov. Artyom is not as primary a character to the story as Homer or Sasha are. In 2034, he is a soldier stationed as part of the garrison at Tulskaya Station.

During the events that transpire at Tulskaya, Popov follows his commander's orders to control the spread of the plague through drastic measures by opening fire on the infected population. What happened next most likely lead to Artyom's death at the scene as the station was eventually flooded, however his exact status is unknown. He has not appeared in any media from the Metro Series ever since.

Trivia[]

  • Due to Popov having the same first name as Artyom Alekseyevich Chyornyj (the protagonist of Metro 2033, Metro 2035, its video game adaptation, Metro: Last Light, and Metro Exodus), the two are often mistakenly thought of as being the same person - especially by new fans of the series who have not read the second instalment in Glukhovsky's post-apocalyptic trilogy.
  • He has a wife named Galya.
  • Unlike Artyom Chyornyj, Artyom Popov is not a silent protagonist and his dialogue in Metro 2034 is actually shown.
  • Moments before the station is flooded, a young dirty soldier sneaks past the infected to a "radio" mounted on a support beam and yells something into it, before being shot by one of the Hunter's men. This detail in the novel seems very random and as the station begins flooding immidetelly after, it is possible that the mentioned soldier is Popov and that the "radio" somehow activated the explosives, placed earlier at several critical points by commanding officer. Though this claim is unconfirmed.
  • Dialogue in the novel indirectly states that Popov is member of the Sevastopolskaya's group, and as such, resident of Sevastopolskaya. First mention is when the commanding officer tells him that they the situation will be soon over and they will both be able to return back to their families (indicating that their families are not at Tulskaya, meaning that they are not from there). Another, more direct confirmation, is the commanding officer telling Popol about the most recent infected guards, listing three, "two from here and one ours", as the Sevastopolskaya's group is the only other confirmed group enforcing quarantine at Tulskaya, along with Tulskaya's guards.
