Beyond the Horizon (Russian: За горизонт) is a novel that is part of the Universe of Metro 2033, a long-running series of short stories, novellas and novels written by different authors, all set in the world of Metro. Beyond the Horizon, written by Russian author Andrey Dyakov, was originally published in February of 2013. Although there is currently no English version of the book, Beyond the Horizon has been translated into a number of other European languages. The novel was translated to Polish by Paweł Podmiotko and published in Poland on the 9th of October, 2013.
The book is a direct sequel to Into the Darkness as well as the third and final chapter of Andrey Dyakov's trilogy, started back in 2010 with Towards the Light. Unlike its predecessors, Beyond the Horizon features St. Petersburg and its metro as a setting only initially, as the story spans a journey westwards across Russia, south to Kazakhstan, eastwards by the southernmost Asian coasts and all the way to Vladivostok.
Synopsis[]
The St. Petersburg Metro is plunged into yet another war - this time it's the Vegan Imperium, trying to conquer the independent stations. Meanwhile, Taran (an experienced stalker) finds a trace of the Alpheios project, which may be able to clear the surface of the city of deadly radiation and give the survivors hope that they could one day leave their tunnels or shelters. The trail leads to the Far East, to Vladivostok. The Vegan Imperium's opponents would like to have Taran on their side due to his previous experience with the bloodthirsty faction, but he sees things differently.
Ready to burn bridges and leave the St. Petersburg metro by force, Taran sets out to seek hope for the world somewhere else, beyond the horizon. On this mission, he is joined by his foster-children Gleb and Aurora, as well as his proven friends and companions Injun, Godless One, Migalych, and Gennadiy. The journey takes them across Asia, making Beyond the Horizon one of the few books in the series to feature such a large trip and so many different locations in just one story.
