Description[]

The year is 2028. The survivors of nuclear Armageddon cling to existence in the subways beneath Moscow.
Experience a new story-driven adventure built exclusively for VR that blends atmospheric exploration, stealth and combat in the most immersive Metro experience yet.
Put on your gas mask and brave the crippling radiation and deadly threats of the Metro in this chilling, supernatural story from Dmitry Glukhovsky.[2]

Overview[]

The year is 2028. 15 years have passed since the world was consumed by nuclear fire. Serdar and his wife Yana have made their home in Akademecheskaya station. But when Yana disappears, following the voices of a traumatic past drawing her deeper into the dark, ominous tunnels, Serdar must follow – and walk through the fire that will rewrite the rules, burn away his beliefs and awaken the man he is destined to become: Khan.
Metro Awakening is the origin story of Khan and how he came to be the travelling mystic known and loved by fans of the Metro books and games. Deep below the irradiated ruins of a dead world, Khan is forced to embrace realities beyond his own understanding, and come to see the Metro as a living, breathing thing – with a soul, a mind, and a will of its own.[3]

Gameplay[]

The gameplay of Metro Awakening is less akin to the semi open-world system of Metro Exodus, and more similar to the linear first-person progression of Metro 2033 and Metro: Last Light with its story-driven focus. Metro Awakening uses a VR control format reminiscent of BONEWORKS and the Quest VR port of Resident Evil 4 (such as grabbing right shoulder with right hand to equip double handed guns such as Kalash (AK-74M) and Shambler, or grabbing right waist to equip the Stallion).

Unlike Metro 2033/Last Light, there's no bullet currency system, and very little chance to stay in the station during the progress. Instead, the liner progression is often broken up by environment puzzle to solve by flipping switch or moving handles, carrying physics objects that reminiscent of Amnesia: The Dark Descent, and keep walking repeating corridors to figure out which way is the correct way forward, reminiscent of P.T..

Reception[]

According to Metacritic, the game received "generally favorable reviews".

The game was nominated for "Best VR/AR Game" at The Game Awards 2024.

It also won "VR Game of the Year" at the Steam Awards.
