Robert Jerzy Szmidt is a Polish science-fiction and fantasy writer, translator, editor, journalist, and publisher. He is the author of three novels from the Universe of Metro 2033 series set in Poland.
Dmitry Glukhovsky has referred to Szmidt as "Destroyer of Worlds, a known Polish post-apocalyptic writer".
Overview[]
Born and raised in Wrocław, Robert trained to be a sailor but never worked as one. During the late 1980s and early 1990s he worked as a sales representative for Amber Publishing House, as well as dabbling in video and book selling businesses. He became the owner of one of the first legal video rentals in Poland.
In the late 1980s he created two magazines: Video Business and Video Premiery. Afterwards he moved into video games publishing (PlayStation Plus and Player Station Plus magazines), and he began working as a translator.
Robert J. Szmidt joined the Polish sci-fi fandom in the early 1980s, soon becoming a co-founder of the Sphinx Award, which was later renamed as the Zajdel Award. In 1985, he won the Śląkfa Prize as Fan of the Year. Robert moved to Katowice in 1986.
He founded the Science Fiction magazine in 2000, then created the Nautilus Award in 2004. Szmidt is currently a publisher and editor in chief of the Science Fiction, Fantasy & Horror monthly magazine, which is the new name of the former Science Fiction magazine. He now resides in Ogrodzieniec.
