Ukraine (Ukrainian: Україна), occasionally still referred to as the Ukraine, is a Slavic country in Eastern Europe and a minor location of the Metro Series - primarily some stories from the Universe of Metro 2033 books. It is bordered by Poland, Slovakia, and Hungary to the west; Romania, Moldova, the Black Sea and Azov Sea to the south; Russia to the east; and Belarus to the north.

Not much is known about the situation in Ukraine after World War III. Its capital city of Kyiv is home to the deepest underground metro system in the world, so it is expected to have become a refuge for at least a small number of people. This is confirmed by Whispers of the Fallen. The novel War of Moles takes place within the Kiev metro.

Some of the Ukrainian locations that have definitely harboured survivors after the war are: its capital Kiev, Kharkiv, Odessa, and Sevastopol (a federal city of Russia following the annexation of Crimea by the Russian Federation in 2014; however, since the war preceding the events of 2033 happened in 2013, it is safe to assume that Sevastopol was still a part of Ukraine in the continuity of the Metro series).
Trivia
- Ukraine's name is said to be derived from the Old Polish and Russian word for "borderland", as for most of its history - when not controlled by the Zaporizhian Cossacks - it was the easternmost territory of the Kingdom of Poland or one of the southwest lands of Imperial Russia. However, this fact is somewhat controversial, especially among Ukrainian nationalists.
